Becoming an LNC

For nearly 20 years, legal nurse consultants (LNCs) have served as liaisons between the medical and legal disciplines, as unique and valuable members of the litigation team.

How do LNCs get their start? LNCs start out as nurses in a variety of clinical settings: medical-surgical nursing, intensive care, cardiovascular, emergency, rehabilitation, quality assurance, obstetrics, and many others. They often begin the practice of legal nurse consulting by reviewing medical records or consulting with an attorney about the medical aspects of a case. Many begin the transition from clinical nursing to the medical-legal arena by working part-time.

As LNCs, nurses are employed by law firms, hospitals, insurance companies, government agencies, and consulting firms, and many are self-employed. They provide support to attorneys in medically-related litigation and medical-legal areas such as personal injury, product liability, medical negligence, toxic torts, workers' compensation, risk management, and fraud and abuse.

If you are a nurse who is ready for a change, legal nurse consulting may be just the exciting new career that you are looking for.

To determine whether legal nurse consulting is right for you, and whether you're ready for the challenge of a new career, take a few minutes to answer the questions in AALNC's self-assessment tool.
