Sometimes it can be hard to connect in meaningful ways with other legal nurse consulting professionals—especially when switching jobs and entering a new field. However, one AALNC member explains how she was able to use networking to bring success to a fellow LNC, Erica Williams, RN:
“I met Erica at an AALNC Chapter meeting in September. She sent me her CV and we kept in touch after the event. She has worked as an LNC may years ago and decided to re-enter the field. For the past 6 months she has worked with me on various medical legal projects. I was impressed with her work and the professionalism she displayed. She recently applied for a position in-house at a very large and well-known law firm in Philadelphia, PA.
Since I was listed as a current job reference for Erica, the attorney who interviewed her called me within fifteen minutes of her leaving and asked if she should hire her.
I had actually met this particular attorney previously through networking events. Though I had never done any work with the firm, I maintained a friendly professional relationship and he valued the role of nurses at his firm. He said, 'If you tell me she is good and I have your word, then I want to make her an offer.'
All of this networking paid off for Erica—the offer was made to her by the end of the day.
Erica and I will both tell you, 'You can’t sit behind a desk and expect things to happen!' We both agree you have to be out there and networking with the people who are where you want to be."
Erica agrees. "Networking will get you experience and confidence. Put yourself out there, be honest about what you are trying to accomplish and meet your LNC colleagues. I'm grateful to my contacts at AALNC for helping me to gain experience that lead to full time employment."
