The Columbia, South Carolina Chapter of AALNC is an active, connected and vibrant community of legal nurse consultants who are dedicated to ongoing professional development through education, networking and mutual support. Although our name suggests that we are from Columbia, the capital of our beautiful state, we actually have members from all over the state of South Carolina as well as our neighboring states of Georgia and North Carolina.
To meet the needs of our geographically and professionally diverse membership, our quarterly meetings are held at various locations and cover a plethora of topics. Our biggest and most popular event is our Annual Education Conference, and this year it was held on February 19-20, 2016 on beautiful Hilton Head Island. After a fun networking dinner on Friday evening, we met at Hilton Head Hospital to learn about wound care and litigation. Presenters included Wound Care Nurses, an MD Wound Care Specialist, an Attorney, and Legal Nurse Consultants. Breakfast, lunch, and 6.0 Continuing Education Units were included for participants.
We are continually looking for ways to improve our chapter in order to better meet the needs of our membership, and our updated website is a perfect example of that. We are thrilled that members and non-members can go to our website to find out about and sign up for upcoming events, reach us through our contact form, and download an application for membership.
On May 17, 2016, we will be spreading our wings again when we offer our first webinar: ‘Legal Perspectives for Nurses on Patient Safety’, presented by Susan K. Smith, DNP, RN, CEN, CCRN, CLCP. Those who can will meet for lunch at Providence Hospital in Columbia, and then watch the webinar along with clinical nurses from Providence Hospital and LNCs from elsewhere. One contact hour will be awarded to participants.
Considering these excellent opportunities for ongoing career development as well as the innumerable benefits afforded to members of the AALNC, it is not surprising that we have many longstanding members and we gain new members each year. Because one of our 2016 goals is to reach out to legal nurses in North Carolina, our August 12, 2016 meeting will be held in Charlotte. Then in November we will be back in Mount Pleasant, SC for another fun ‘low country’ weekend.
It is our honor and pleasure to be the host chapter at the 2016 AALNC Annual Forum in Charlotte. We hope you will join us for this exciting educational and networking opportunity. Please stop by our table and say hi. If you mention that you read this blog post, we will have a little southern surprise for you!
Come on down, y’all!
