Description:

Radiologists should use standardized terminology in reporting spinal imaging pathology for consistent understanding by clinicians and medical-legal professionals. Recently a combined task force of the North American Spine Society, the American Society of Spine Radiology & the American Society of Neuroradiology published their recommended revision, Lumbar Disc Nomenclature: Version 2.0, to the guideline that had been in use for over a decade. Degenerative changes on spinal imaging, commonly age-related, have been found with increasing prevalence in asymptomatic patients as they age. Accurate radiographic interpretation of findings requires knowledge of the patient’s clinical history, including presence of any symptoms. Enhanced communication between treating clinicians and radiologists should result in better patient outcomes.
