Journal of Legal Nurse Consulting Editor Position

Position Responsibilities and Expectations

The Editor utilizes the Journal to educate and inform the Legal Nurse Consultant about current practice, professional development, and the promotion of legal nurse consulting within the medical-legal community.  The Editor provides oversight to the Editorial Committee and peer reviewers in the selection and substantive editing of Journal manuscripts.  

Qualifications:

  • Executive editorial experience
  • Previous publication in a peer-reviewed journal
  • RN or RN-JD credentials
  • Active LNCC certification preferred
  • Member in good standing of the AALNC preferred

The Journal Editor shall:

  • In partnership with the AALNC Board of Directors, maintain the overall strategic direction of the Journal consistent with the Association’s positions and values.
  • Demonstrate leadership to achieve the goals determined by that strategic direction.
  • Publish four (4) issues of the Journal annually – Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.
  • Meet with the Editorial Committee monthly to discuss the status of pending Journal submissions and ensure the timely production of each issue.
  • Develop agendas, direct activities, and schedule the telephone/video conference schedule of meetings.
  • Provide minutes of the monthly Editorial Committee meetings (or other monthly written reports) to the AALNC Board of Directors that include the rate of submission, acceptance rate, origin of submitted and accepted papers, time lag to first decision and the final decision, or other statistics.
  • Maintain a record of participation of Editorial Committee members and complete AALNC’s Committee Evaluation Form.
  • Meet with the Board Liaison quarterly via phone/video conference, or Liaison may attend monthly meetings.
  • Ensure activities follow the schedule of publication for the Journal.
  • Gather, solicit, and assist Editorial Committee members in soliciting manuscripts for publication.
  • Screen submissions and forward them to peer reviewers. If a manuscript is not suitable for publication, communicate this in a professional way to the author.
  • Develop and maintain a peer review process that ensures manuscripts are reviewed by subject matter experts.
  • Maintain the utmost integrity of the double-blind peer review process.
  • Work with authors to revise manuscripts as needed per peer reviewers’ comments and editorial recommendations for clarity, scholarly accuracy, quality, and compliance with publication guidelines. If an manuscript is not suitable for publication, communicate this in a professional way to the author.
  • Submit records of authorization to reprint published material and releases from authors of original submissions to AALNC staff.
  • Write a thoughtful editorial for each issue.
  • Develop collegial relationships with other journal editors and explore article exchanges with other journals.
  • Develop or revise ancillary material such as style guidelines for authors, solicitation requests to authors, releases, peer review form, etc.
  • Offer input to the AALNC Director of Programs for annual needs assessment questions to solicit any member feedback desired by the Editorial Committee.
  • Review needs assessment survey results to identify potential manuscript topics.
  • Coordinate any continuing education credits within the JLNC with the AALNC Director of Programs in alignment with any budget approval for the calendar year.
  • Hold a peer review training session, recorded and available to access on-demand, at the beginning of each calendar year.
  • As needed or requested, conduct webinars regarding “how to write Journal manuscripts” and provide a session (either by Editor or Editorial Committee member) at AALNC’s annual Legal Nurse Consulting Educational and Networking Forum as requested.
  • Compile an annual index of authors, article titles, and keywords for AALNC Headquarters to incorporate into the JLNC webpage for its search feature.  Maintain a cumulative index for all issues.
  • Participate in the annual budgeting process for Journal activities as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Disclose that his/her opinions are his/her own and not reflective of the Association in any public discourse. Use of JLNC and/or AALNC signature will only be used for official JLNC and/or AALNC correspondence and not in public forums.
  • Develop and maintain a peer review process that ensures manuscripts are reviewed by subject matter experts.
  • Register each published issue's metadata in the Crossref web deposit to register articles for Digital Object Identifier [DOI]. 
  • Reports to the Executive Director.

Timelines for publication of Journal:

  • The following timeline is a guideline for timely and efficient publication of the Journal:
    • 16 weeks prior to publication date: Ensure the submission of solicited manuscripts.
    • 15 weeks prior to publication date: Blind each submission and forward it to peer reviewers for comment using a standardized form.
    • 13 weeks prior to publication date: Ensure peer reviewers return peer review form to the Editor with feedback, comments, and any suggested revisions for the subject manuscript.
    • 12 weeks prior to publication date: Blind peer reviewers’ feedback and forward it to the author for revisions as necessary.
    • 6 weeks prior to publication date (or in accordance with the publication schedule): Submit formatted, finalized manuscripts to SmithBucklin Creative for final layout.
      • Work with SmithBucklin Creative to finalize and proof the journal layout in accordance with the publication schedule.
    • Journal publishing dates are the first business day of March, June, September, and December.
    • The Journal is published both electronically and in print.

AALNC Headquarters will maintain the subscription list and email notification of publication to all members, the EBSCO indexing service, and others as appropriate, and post the Journal on the AALNC website within 7 business days of the publication link approval.

This position is for the 2021 calendar year with an option to extend.
